Unmanned Tanker MT Al Jafzia Runs Aground Off Manori Amid Heavy Rains in Mumbai

An unmanned merchant tanker, MT Al Jafzia , has presumably run aground off Manori in north Mumbai , prompting a swift response from maritime authorities amid heavy monsoon rains and rough sea conditions.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said it received an alert from the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping) on July 5 regarding the drifting of three vessels MT Asphalt Star, MT Stellar Ruby, and MT Al Jafzia due to inclement weather conditions . In response, ICGS Samrat was diverted to assess the situation and provide assistance, while the DG Shipping was asked to deploy the Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) Water Lily .

According to officials, MT Asphalt Star and MT Stellar Ruby are anchored safely with crew onboard. However, MT Al Jafzia, which was unmanned at anchorage, is believed to have run aground near Manori beach, approximately one kilometre offshore .

The Coast Guard further stated that ICGS Samudra Prahari and ETV Water Lily are maintaining a presence in the area to support ongoing assessment and assistance operations.

Mumbai Police confirmed that the vessel was first reported stranded in the morning. A Gorai police official said all concerned agencies, including the Navy and Coast Guard, were immediately alerted as per protocol .

“The ship is stalled around 1 km from Manori beach and has dropped anchor. No untoward incident has been reported,” the official said.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation , while local fishermen noted that the rocky terrain and strong winds have made the area unsafe for smaller vessels.

Mumbai and adjoining regions have been witnessing very heavy rainfall over the past few days , disrupting normal life and maritime movement.
