Union Minister K V Singh To Lead India At UN Migration Forum In New York
Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment, Kirti Vardhan Singh, will represent India at the Second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) to be held in New York City from May 4 to 8, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Saturday.
The IMRF, convened under the United Nations General Assembly, serves as the primary global intergovernmental platform to review progress on migration governance. It focuses on the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration and its linkage with the Sustainable Development Goals.
Singh will lead the Indian delegation and is scheduled to deliver India’s national statement during the plenary session, outlining the country’s position on key migration-related issues, including migrant welfare, policy coordination and international cooperation.
The forum will feature four interactive multi-stakeholder round tables , along with a policy debate and plenary discussions, bringing together governments, international organisations and civil society stakeholders to deliberate on evolving migration challenges.
A major outcome of the IMRF will be the adoption of a ‘Progress Declaration’ , which will capture commitments and the future course of action by participating countries on migration governance.
The MEA highlighted that the second IMRF builds on the first edition held in 2022, where India had actively contributed towards safeguarding and advancing the interests of its large migrant community.
On the sidelines of the event, India will host a side-event titled “Leveraging Digital Innovation in Migration Governance The e-Migrate Experience of India” . The session will showcase India’s digital initiatives aimed at improving migration systems and enhancing protection for migrant workers.
India’s participation reflects its continued engagement in shaping global migration discourse while prioritising the interests of its diaspora.
