Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clears plan for 76 passenger holding areas across India
Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved a major plan to develop 76 new passenger holding areas at key railway stations across the country. The decision follows the remarkable success of the Yatri Suvidha Kendra at New Delhi railway station , which proved vital in handling festive-season crowds during Diwali and Chhath.
According to the railway ministry, the upcoming holding areas will follow a modular, locally adaptable design , built to accommodate large volumes of passengers while improving convenience, hygiene, and crowd flow. The minister has instructed that all facilities be completed ahead of the 2026 festival season , when passenger traffic usually peaks across India.
The New Delhi holding area , completed in just four months, is now seen as the national model. It can hold nearly 7,000 passengers at any given time and features separate zones for ticketing, pre-boarding, and post-ticketing , 150 toilets each for men and women , ticket counters , automatic vending machines , and RO drinking water units .
Why passenger holding areas matter
Passenger holding areas act as buffer zones between the ticketing halls and platforms, designed to manage large crowds safely and comfortably . During rush hours or festival seasons, they prevent overcrowding on platforms, reduce security risks, and offer a more organized waiting experience. They also help passengers, especially families, senior citizens, and differently abled travellers, wait in a safe, shaded, and hygienic environment before boarding.
Additional facilities passengers need
While holding areas are a big step forward, railway experts believe that passengers also need a comprehensive improvement in station amenities . These include:
• Clean, well-maintained toilets and accessible sanitation for women and children
• Charging points , free Wi-Fi , and digital display boards showing live train updates
• Comfortable seating , air-cooling , and designated rest zones for long-distance travellers
• Better signage and navigation systems within stations
• Affordable food courts and water refilling stations to minimize congestion around vendors
• Barrier-free access for differently abled passengers through ramps, tactile flooring, and elevators
By addressing these needs through smart design, modular infrastructure, and digital integration, the Indian Railways aims to move closer to its vision of a world-class, commuter-friendly network .
This new plan for passenger holding areas, combined with initiatives like the Amrit Bharat station scheme , marks a shift from merely expanding capacity to enhancing the passenger experience , making railway travel not just affordable, but also comfortable, safe, and dignified.
Gist: The initiative aims to ease overcrowding and enhance passenger comfort with smarter, safer, and more organized waiting spaces across major railway stations.
