The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the continuation of the government’s flagship Atal Pension Yojana (APY) up to the financial year 2030-31, along with the extension of government support for promotional, developmental, and gap funding activities to expand the scheme’s reach. Launched on May 9, 2015 , APY aims to provide old-age income security to workers in the unorganised sector by guaranteeing a monthly pension after the age of 60. As of January 19, 2026 , over 8.66 crore subscribers have enrolled under the scheme.

Under APY, subscribers can choose a pension of Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month , starting at age 60, depending on their contributions. The scheme is open to Indian citizens aged 18–40 years , and contributions are linked to the age at joining and the chosen pension amount. Managed by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) , APY ensures a safe and guaranteed retirement benefit .

The Cabinet noted that continued government support would help expand outreach among unorganised workers through awareness campaigns, capacity building, and other promotional initiatives. The decision ensures that APY continues to provide financial security, promote social security, and strengthen financial inclusion for workers in the unorganised sector nationwide. The move underscores the government’s commitment to long-term old-age income security while sustaining a key social security initiative that benefits millions of unorganised sector workers across India.
