The Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is the principal source of data on employment and unemployment conditions in India. Since January 2025, the survey methodology has been revised to provide monthly and quarterly estimates of labour market indicators using the Current Weekly Status (CWS) approach. The March 2026 Monthly Bulletin is the twelfth in the series, based on responses from 3,75,262 individuals aged 15 years and above.

The overall Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) stood at 55.4% in March 2026, showing a slight decline from 55.9% in February 2026. Rural LFPR was recorded at 58.0%, down from 58.7% in the previous month, while the Urban Labour Force Participation Rate remained broadly stable at 50.3%, indicating steady urban workforce participation despite mild rural moderation.

The Female Labour Force Participation Rate declined to 34.4% in March 2026 from 35.3% in February 2026, continuing a gradual downward trend. Rural female LFPR stood at 38.9%, while urban female participation remained significantly lower at 25.2%, highlighting persistent rural-urban disparity in female workforce engagement .

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) remained broadly stable at 52.6% in March 2026. Rural WPR stood at 55.5%, compared to 56.3% in February 2026, while the Urban WPR was 46.8% against 47.0% in the previous month, indicating only marginal changes in employment levels.

The Unemployment Rate (UR) rose to 5.1% in March 2026 from 4.9% in February 2026. The increase was mainly driven by urban areas, where unemployment edged up to 6.8% from 6.6%. Rural female unemployment remained largely stable, suggesting limited change in rural labour market stress even as urban joblessness showed mild pressure.

Overall, the data indicates a slightly softening labour market , with marginal decline in participation, a small rise in unemployment led by urban areas, and continued weakness in female participation, while core employment indicators remain broadly stable.
