Unbreakable Sinner Edges Medvedev in Thriller to Reach Rome Title Clash
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner showed tremendous grit and determination to defeat Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 and book his place in the Italian Open final after their rain interrupted semifinal resumed in Rome on Saturday.
The match had been suspended late Friday night due to rain, with Sinner leading 4-2 in the deciding set. Returning to the court on Saturday, the Italian kept his composure and quickly wrapped up the victory, extending his remarkable winning streak to 28 matches .
The win puts Sinner one step away from history. A victory in Sunday’s final against Casper Ruud would make him only the second player after Novak Djokovic to win all nine ATP Masters 1000 titles .
Sinner started strongly, dominating the opening set with aggressive baseline play and sharp movement. However, Medvedev fought back brilliantly in the second set, forcing the Italian into long rallies and repeatedly moving him around the court with drop shots and angled groundstrokes.
The physical strain on Sinner became visible as the contest progressed. The 24-year-old appeared exhausted at times and even received treatment on his right thigh during the second set. Despite recovering from a 3-0 deficit, he lost the set after Medvedev secured a crucial late break.
But Sinner regained control in the deciding set before rain stopped play overnight. When the semifinal resumed, he maintained his focus and sealed the victory in front of an excited home crowd at the Foro Italico .
Ruud reached the final after a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Luciano Darderi . However, the Norwegian faces a tough challenge, with Sinner having won all four of their previous meetings without dropping a set.
Now, with the Rome title and history within reach , Italy’s biggest tennis star stands on the verge of another unforgettable achievement.
