Araku YSRCP MP Dr Gumma Tanuja Rani addressed the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) as part of the Indian parliamentary delegation, calling for continued reforms to improve transparency and efficiency in the UN’s administrative and financial functioning.

Speaking on the agenda item concerning the Organisation of Work, Tanuja Rani said the United Nations needs sustained institutional reforms to strengthen its effectiveness and ensure that its administrative and financial mechanisms function with greater transparency. She stressed that improving the efficiency of the global body should remain a key consideration as member states discuss changes to its functioning.

She also underlined the importance of maintaining a clear balance between reform and institutional responsibilities. Referring to the functioning of the UN Fifth Committee, which deals with administrative and budgetary matters, she said the specific powers and responsibilities assigned to advisory committees must be respected during the reform process.

Tanuja Rani said decisions concerning the UN’s administrative and financial affairs should be guided by transparency, accountability and efficiency. According to her, reforms should not merely introduce structural changes but should also help the organisation deliver its responsibilities in a more effective manner.

She further pointed to the importance of preserving the established roles of different committees within the UN framework. While reforms are necessary to improve the organisation’s functioning, she said the mandates given to individual committees and their institutional responsibilities should not be overlooked.

The MP’s intervention came as the UN General Assembly considered matters related to the organisation of its work and the broader functioning of its administrative mechanisms. Her remarks highlighted India’s emphasis on making international institutions more effective while maintaining established procedures and responsibilities.

As a member of the Indian parliamentary delegation, Tanuja Rani’s participation in the General Assembly provided an opportunity to place India’s views before an international audience. Her address focused on strengthening the UN’s institutional functioning through reforms that promote greater accountability, transparency and administrative efficiency.

The remarks also emphasised that meaningful reform requires cooperation among member states and respect for the roles assigned to various UN bodies. Tanuja Rani maintained that improving efficiency should go hand in hand with protecting the institutional framework through which the organisation carries out its administrative and financial responsibilities.
