UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed is set to visit India from August 26 to 28, with sustainable development, UN India cooperation and digital innovation expected to be central to her discussions in New Delhi.

During her visit, Mohammed will meet senior Indian government officials to discuss UN India cooperation and the country’s engagement in advancing sustainable development, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said.

She will also meet students at an Indian Institute of Technology to discuss the opportunities and challenges of using digital innovation to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The interaction comes as technology and digital solutions become increasingly important to efforts to accelerate progress on the UN’s 2030 Agenda.

India will be the final leg of Mohammed’s wider Asia tour. Before arriving in New Delhi, she is travelling to China, where she will convene the third dialogue on Artificial Intelligence and Human Development. The high level dialogue is part of a global series examining how AI is shaping human progress and the opportunities and challenges presented by the technology.

On August 23, Mohammed will travel to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, on behalf of Guterres to attend the 17th session of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP17). She is expected to highlight the need to accelerate land restoration, strengthen resilience and advance sustainable development amid growing challenges from desertification, land degradation and drought.

The India visit will also build on Mohammed’s previous trip to the country in July 2023. She met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and travelled to Bengaluru, where she interacted with experts from technology research institutions and industry representatives. Discussions focused on India’s digital technology achievements and how they could be adapted across the Global South to address development challenges.

Mohammed is the UN Deputy Secretary-General and Chair of the UN Sustainable Development Group, giving her a key role in coordinating development efforts across the UN system.

Her August visit will connect several of the UN’s current priorities, including sustainable development, digital innovation, AI and climate resilience. She is scheduled to return to New York on August 28.
