Umang school: Empowering differently-abled children
Umang Divyang Vidyalaya, a pioneering school for specially-abled children funded by the District Mineral Foundation Trust under the guidance of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, is transforming lives and setting new benchmarks in inclusive education. The school provides free, high-quality education to fifty children with disabilities, using Braille and sign language to ensure every student can learn effectively and confidently.
The institution was established to support children who faced challenges in mainstream schools, providing them with a safe, nurturing, and accessible environment. District Collector Ajit Vasant highlighted that the school operates completely free of cost, covering tuition, therapy sessions, and other essential services, ensuring children from all economic backgrounds can access quality education without barriers.
Teachers at Umang are carefully appointed based on their ability to cater to the individual needs of each student. The school employs a holistic approach to learning, combining academic instruction with non-academic activities such as music, dance, art, and craft. In addition, students receive hearing therapy, physiotherapy, and personalized learning plans that help them progress at their own pace. “We track students’ progress carefully and promote them to higher levels as they develop new skills,” explained teacher Indu, emphasizing that teaching specially-abled children requires not just knowledge, but patience, empathy, and dedication.
Beyond academics, Umang Divyang Vidyalaya aims to equip children with life skills and confidence, preparing them to participate actively in society. By creating an inclusive environment where every child has equal opportunities, the school embodies the principles of social justice, ensuring that specially-abled children are not left behind and can enjoy equal rights and social recognition.
The school’s comprehensive model empowers students to develop independence, self-esteem, and the ability to integrate seamlessly into mainstream society. By promoting inclusivity, equality, and personal growth, Umang Divyang Vidyalaya reflects Chhattisgarh’s commitment to building a more equitable and compassionate society, where every child regardless of ability has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
