At least four security personnel were injured after militants attacked an Assam Police Commando camp in Tinsukia district early Sunday, with the banned insurgent group United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent) claiming responsibility and terming the strike “Operation Bujoni.”

According to police officials, the attack occurred around 2:30 am in the Jagun area, when militants fired multiple rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) shells at the camp. At least five shells exploded, triggering panic and damage within the premises. Security personnel stationed at the camp retaliated immediately, leading to a brief exchange of gunfire.

Preliminary investigations suggest the attack was carried out by a group of around seven militants, who managed to escape under the cover of darkness towards Arunachal Pradesh.

The injured personnel were rushed to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh. Hospital authorities confirmed that all four are in stable condition and out of danger.

In a statement issued later, ULFA(I) said the attack was part of its “Operation Bujoni,” describing it as a retaliatory action against what it termed “continued operations” by Assam Police against its cadres and supporters. The outfit also alleged that Indian armed forces had conducted drone and missile strikes on its camps along the India–Myanmar border last year.

The group claimed it had refrained from targeting state police since 2021 as a gesture during peace overtures following the formation of the government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma. However, it accused security agencies of continuing actions against its network, prompting a return to armed operations.

ULFA(I) further warned the state police to desist from what it called “subversive activities,” indicating the possibility of further retaliatory strikes.

The attack comes weeks ahead of the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, raising concerns over security preparedness in sensitive regions. Authorities have launched a search operation in the area, and security has been intensified along the inter-state border.

ULFA(I), a hardline faction of the original ULFA, has remained active in border areas and continues to reject peace talks, advocating for a sovereign Assam.
