Ukraine-Russia conflict intensifies as Easter truce talks continue
Russia’s sustained missile and drone attacks on Ukraine killed at least eight civilians Friday, even as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirmed Kyiv’s willingness to consider a temporary Easter ceasefire . The Orthodox Easter holiday falls on April 12, and Kyiv submitted the proposal through U.S. diplomatic channels, while Moscow has publicly rejected it , calling it a “PR stunt” and continuing its bombardments. Ukrainian officials also confirmed planned prisoner exchanges ahead of Easter despite ongoing hostilities.
The capital region and surrounding towns of Bucha, Fastiv, and Obukhiv suffered a massive daytime strike , a marked shift from previous nocturnal attacks. Additional bombardments hit Sumy, Kherson, Zhytomyr, Kharkiv, and Donetsk, killing and injuring civilians and damaging homes. Emergency responders reported the deaths of nearly 20 animals at a veterinary clinic near Kyiv. Ukrainian officials warn that Russia now targets water supply systems and logistics networks , expanding beyond energy infrastructure, aiming to maximize civilian casualties.
Ukrainian forces continue offensive actions, including drone strikes deep inside Russian territory , hitting industrial facilities in Leningrad and Belgorod, injuring personnel and causing fires. Russia reported intercepting many of these drones, including near Moscow. Authorities noted that over 500 drones and dozens of missiles struck Ukraine in the past 24 hours alone, particularly in Kyiv suburbs and Kharkiv.
Despite the attacks, Zelenskyy said intelligence reports indicate a stabilization of frontlines, with Ukrainian forces regaining limited territory. Kyiv is also pursuing long-term security guarantees and defense support from Western partners , while Moscow maintains its insistence on a comprehensive peace settlement rather than a temporary pause in hostilities. Analysts note that while Kyiv remains open to a symbolic ceasefire, the chances of an effective Easter truce remain uncertain as fighting continues.
