Ukraine moves to renew diplomatic push toward ending the war with Russia

Ukraine is stepping up its diplomatic efforts to revive stalled peace negotiations, with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy signalling a renewed push toward ending the war that has raged for nearly three years. Speaking on Tuesday during a press conference in Madrid alongside Spain’s Prime Minister, Zelenskiy said Kyiv would try to “reactivate” the diplomatic process aimed at securing a viable path to peace. He emphasised that consistent international backing remains crucial, noting that “it’s important, as this is going on, to feel constant support behind one’s back.”

Zelenskiy confirmed that he is scheduled to speak with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday to explore ways of achieving what he described as a “just peace” for Ukraine. Turkey previously hosted talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in spring 2022 and again earlier this year, though neither round succeeded in halting the fighting.

“Meeting with President Erdogan will be enough for a substantive discussion,” Zelenskiy said, expressing hope that Ankara’s continuing engagement could help reopen meaningful diplomatic channels. He also referred to receiving “positions and signals” from the United States ahead of Wednesday’s discussion, but declined to elaborate.

Ukraine’s renewed diplomatic outreach comes against the backdrop of a war that began in February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion after years of tension stemming from Moscow’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine. The conflict has since evolved into Europe’s largest land war since World War II, resulting in mass displacement, thousands of civilian casualties, and extensive infrastructure destruction.

As the fighting continues along multiple fronts, Kyiv’s latest moves suggest a deliberate shift toward rebuilding international momentum for negotiations, an effort that, Ukraine hopes, could eventually lay the groundwork for ending the war on fair and secure terms.
