Ukraine claims strike on Russian submarine as Moscow denies damage

Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) said it struck a Project 636.3 Varshavyanka-class submarine equipped with Kalibr missiles , claiming the $400 million vessel suffered critical damage . The agency released video purportedly showing an explosion, while satellite imagery indicated damage to a nearby pier. Russia denied the claim, insisting the submarine and other naval assets remain fully operational.

Ukrainian officials said the operation was aimed at weakening Russia’s ability to launch missile strikes from the Black Sea, as Varshavyanka-class submarines are routinely used to fire Kalibr cruise missiles at Ukrainian military and civilian targets. Kyiv described the submarine as a high-value asset and suggested the damage could put it out of service for a prolonged period.

Moscow rejected the allegations, maintaining that the Black Sea Fleet continues to function normally. Russian authorities have not released evidence to substantiate their denial, and there has been no independent confirmation of Ukraine’s claims.

The reported strike fits into a broader pattern of Ukrainian attacks on Russian naval capabilities. Over the past year, repeated strikes have compelled Russia to relocate several Black Sea Fleet vessels from Crimea to ports considered safer, underscoring mounting pressure on its maritime operations.

The incident comes amid continued fighting on land and renewed diplomatic activity. While Russia reports incremental territorial gains in eastern Ukraine, Kyiv has expanded the use of drones and precision strikes to counter battlefield pressure. Parallel international efforts to explore peace talks continue, though active hostilities persist, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding any potential settlement.
