Ukraine and EU Unite to Build Drones, Missile Defences Amid Escalating War

The European Union and Ukraine have taken a major step toward strengthening their defence cooperation by launching a Defence Industrial Partnership , aimed at expanding joint weapons production as Kyiv continues to battle Russia's prolonged invasion.

The agreement, signed during Ukraine's Statehood Day celebrations in Kyiv, reflects Europe's growing commitment to boosting the country's defence capabilities while reinforcing regional security. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans to deepen collaboration in advanced military manufacturing.

Under a letter of intent , the two sides aim to establish joint drone and anti-drone production by the end of 2026 , followed by anti-ballistic missile manufacturing by 2028 . The initiative is expected to strengthen Ukraine's domestic defence industry while enhancing Europe's long-term military preparedness.

Addressing the ceremony, von der Leyen described Ukraine's struggle as an "existential fight for Europe's freedoms," stressing that Kyiv's resilience contributes directly to the continent's security. She also pledged continued EU assistance to improve Ukraine's air defences before winter, when Russian missile attacks typically target energy infrastructure.

Since the full-scale invasion began in 2022 , Ukraine has evolved from relying heavily on foreign military aid to becoming an important source of battle-tested defence technology , particularly in drone warfare. However, officials say international investment remains essential to expand sophisticated weapons production.

The partnership comes as European nations remain concerned about Russia's broader security ambitions . Ukraine's long-term goal of joining the EU also received renewed political backing, although accession negotiations are expected to take several years.

Meanwhile, the conflict continued to exact a heavy human toll. Ukrainian authorities said Russian aerial attacks killed at least nine civilians and injured 13 others across multiple regions, including Sumy, Odesa, Chernihiv and Zaporizhzhia. Russia, meanwhile, claimed its air defences intercepted 93 Ukrainian drones overnight over several regions and surrounding waters.

The latest agreement highlights Europe's determination to strengthen Ukraine's military resilience while reinforcing collective security against an increasingly uncertain regional landscape.
