British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing a major political crisis after revelations that the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to Washington went ahead despite a failed security vetting process , raising serious questions about oversight and judgment at the top of government.

Starmer is expected to face intense questioning in Parliament over why Mandelson, who has faced longstanding controversy over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein , was appointed without being informed of adverse findings from an intensive security clearance assessment . The Prime Minister maintains that “due process” was followed, but has said he is “furious” after learning that officials had recommended against granting clearance.

The Foreign Office is reported to have proceeded with the appointment regardless. Starmer has defended himself, insisting that had he known about the vetting concerns, Mandelson “would never, ever have been appointed ambassador.” Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy also said the Prime Minister was not made aware of the security issues at the time.

The controversy has triggered a strong political backlash. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused Starmer of having “misled Parliament,” while Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called the situation a case of “catastrophic misjudgment.” Calls for resignation have followed from opposition parties.

Starmer has already dismissed senior civil servant Olly Robbins following the revelations, though allies of Robbins argue he could not have shared sensitive vetting details with the Prime Minister. The issue has deepened unease within the Labour Party, already concerned about falling poll numbers ahead of key local elections on May 7 .

Mandelson’s appointment was initially justified on his diplomatic experience and global contacts, but concerns were raised about his links to Epstein and alleged associations with Russian and Chinese business interests . He was later dismissed in September 2025 after allegations he misrepresented his Epstein ties. Subsequent disclosures suggested he may have shared sensitive government information with Epstein, leading to a criminal investigation. Mandelson was arrested in February 2026 for suspected misconduct in public office and denies wrongdoing.
