UK Labour Leadership Crisis Deepens as Wes Streeting Enters Race Against Starmer

Britain’s ruling Labour Party has been thrown into internal turmoil as senior figures move to challenge Prime Minister Keir Starmer following falling approval ratings and poor local election results.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting has formally declared his intention to contest the leadership, becoming the first senior figure to openly challenge Starmer. Streeting, who resigned from Cabinet citing a loss of confidence in leadership , warned Labour risks becoming “the handmaidens of Nigel Farage” if it fails to reconnect with voters. His political rise from East London public housing to Cambridge University and Parliament in 2015 has made him one of Labour’s most prominent communicators. As Health Secretary, he focused on NHS reform, drawing on his personal experience surviving kidney cancer.

Streeting is likely to face competition from Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham , known as the “King of the North” , who is seeking a route back to Westminster through a forthcoming by-election. Burnham, a former Cabinet minister under Gordon Brown , previously lost two Labour leadership bids but has built strong regional support through his mayoral tenure and criticism of London-centric governance.

The political crisis follows Labour’s sharp losses in local elections , where Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, made significant gains. More than a fifth of Labour MPs are reportedly questioning Starmer’s leadership, intensifying speculation about a possible contest.

If Burnham enters Parliament, a leadership challenge could be triggered, requiring support from at least 81 MPs. Starmer would automatically stand for re-election, while other figures including Angela Rayner and Al Carns are also being discussed.

The unfolding contest could become one of Labour’s most consequential leadership battles in decades, with the outcome likely to shape the party’s direction ahead of the next general election amid rising political pressure from Reform UK.
