UIDAI Achieves milestone of over 1 crore biometric updates for school-children
In a major push under its mission-mode campaign, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has successfully completed over one crore Mandatory Biometric Updates (MBUs) for school-children across 83,000 schools nationwide.
The special MBU drive for school-children, launched in September 2025 , was made possible through technological integration with the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) , which enabled real-time tracking of students’ MBU status. This allowed UIDAI and schools to jointly identify children due for updates and organize on-site biometric camps.
UIDAI CEO Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar had written to Chief Secretaries of all States and Union Territories seeking their support in conducting focused MBU camps. UIDAI’s Regional Offices, spread across eight locations, coordinated with Education Departments, district administrations, registrars, and school authorities over five months to execute the initiative. The campaign remains active until all schools across the country are covered.
Children under five initially enrol for Aadhaar with photograph, name, date of birth, gender, address, and birth certificate , while fingerprints and iris scans are deferred due to immaturity at that age. MBUs, required at ages 5 and 15 , ensure smooth authentication for availing government schemes and registering for exams like NEET, JEE, CUET .
To encourage participation, UIDAI has waived charges for MBUs for children aged 7–15 from October 1, 2025 , for one year. MBUs for children aged 5–7 and 15–17 remain free of charge.
In addition to school camps, children can complete MBUs at Aadhaar Enrolment Centres and Aadhaar Seva Kendras nationwide. During the same period, about 1.3 crore MBU transactions have been completed at these centres.
This initiative has already benefited over 1 crore children , with many more expected to complete their mandatory updates in the coming months.
