Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu on sunday led an awareness meeting in Palasa to rally support for the proposed Uddanam cargo airport, a project hailed as a game-changer for Srikakulam’s underdeveloped Uddanam region. Held under festive banners, the "Uddhanam Airport Avagana Sadassu" drew villagers, farmers, public representatives, and officials, signaling strong community endorsement despite earlier land acquisition concerns.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Ram Mohan Naidu highlighted the airport’s potential to boost connectivity, generate employment, and spur tourism and industry. “This is more than an infrastructure project; it is a gateway to economic prosperity,” he said. The estimated cost of the project, still under feasibility assessment, is projected to range between ₹1,000 crore and ₹2,000 crore ($120–240 million USD), depending on land acquisition and construction needs. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is expected to oversee development, though no contractor has been finalized, with tenders likely to be issued in 2026.

The airport’s site, recently shifted to Sompeta from Mulapeta harbor following protests over the proposed 1,400-acre land acquisition, aims to balance growth with environmental and agricultural priorities. Earlier opposition from groups like the CPI(M) and local farmers, who feared the loss of cashew and mango groves, has softened, with authorities promising transparent consultations and fair compensation. A detailed feasibility report is in progress to address these concerns.

The event featured State Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu, Palasa MLA Gouthu Sireesha, District Collector Swapnil Dinakar, SP Maheshwara Reddy, Joint Collector Farhman Ahmad, and local leaders. Photographs captured lively discussions and a diverse audience, underscoring community engagement. The project aligns with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s vision to expand Andhra Pradesh’s airport network, leveraging the UDAN scheme’s focus on regional connectivity.

While optimism prevails, challenges linger. Critics, including Srikakulam Kisan Morcha convener Tandra Prakash, have urged further scrutiny of environmental impacts. Minister Naidu assured that public suggestions would guide the project, reinforcing trust and inclusivity. With planning underway, the Uddanam Airport is poised to transform the region, pending final approvals and contractor selection.
