UAE Calls Attack on Indian Vessel Off Oman Coast a Terrorist Act, Warns Threats

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has strongly condemned the attack on an Indian flagged commercial vessel near the coast of Oman, describing it as a “terrorist act” and warning of a dangerous escalation threatening global maritime security.

The vessel, which had sailed from Somalia, was targeted on Wednesday in waters close to the strategically important Strait of Hormuz region . According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) , all 14 crew members on board were safely rescued by Omani authorities. However, the identity of those behind the strike has not yet been established.

In a statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said the incident represents a serious threat to international navigation and the stability of critical sea routes. It stressed that attacks on commercial shipping endanger global trade and violate widely accepted principles protecting freedom of navigation .

The UAE also referred to UN Security Council Resolution 2817 , which upholds the importance of secure maritime routes and rejects any targeting of commercial vessels. It warned that the use of key waterways like the Strait of Hormuz for coercion or economic pressure amounts to acts that destabilise regional and global security.

The Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital shipping corridors, carries nearly one fifth of global oil supplies. The region has remained tense amid ongoing instability in West Asia , with repeated disruptions to commercial shipping in recent months. At least two other Indian flagged vessels have reportedly faced similar attacks since the conflict intensified.

The UAE also expressed solidarity with India , stating its support for all measures aimed at ensuring maritime safety and protecting commercial shipping interests. India had earlier called the attack “unacceptable”, reflecting growing international concern over rising threats to merchant vessels in the region.

As investigations continue, the incident adds to fears of escalating risks in one of the world’s most sensitive and strategic sea lanes.
