Two tragic suicides in Telangana ahead of local elections
As the state gears up for local body elections, political discussions are intensifying across villages and towns. However, before the election season could fully take off, two shocking incidents of suicide have cast a shadow over the political atmosphere.
In Nirmal and Nalgonda districts, two individuals connected to candidates from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) party took their own lives within a single day, leaving families and communities in shock.
In Nirmal district, residents were stunned early Thursday morning when the husband (54) of a female BRS candidate for Sarpanch was found dead at home, having set himself on fire. Family members discovered him in his room, and police immediately arrived at the scene.
Police confirmed that a case has been registered, and the body was sent for postmortem. “Preliminary reports suggest the individual committed suicide by self-immolation early in the morning. Investigation is ongoing,” a police official said. The candidate’s family is reportedly in deep shock, and the village is reeling from the tragic incident amid election preparations.
A similar tragedy occurred in Nalgonda district, where a 40-year-old woman contesting as a BRS Ward member committed suicide at home Wednesday evening. Her husband reported the incident to the police the following day. Authorities have registered a case and sent the body for postmortem examination.
“This incident occurred yesterday evening. A case has been filed and investigation is underway. We are looking into the reasons behind her death,” said a police officer. The tragedy has left the Chityal area in a state of shock, with residents and local leaders expressing grief.
While stress and family involvement in politics are not uncommon during elections, political analysts and party members are alarmed that similar tragedies occurred on the same day in two different districts involving BRS candidates’ families. Authorities are investigating whether personal issues, election-related pressure, or other factors led to the suicides. Police have stated that it may take time to determine the exact reasons behind these incidents.
