Two killed, one injured in Elephant attack in Jharkhand’s Giridih

Two persons were killed and one was injured after being trampled by a wild elephant in Jharkhand’s Giridih district on Monday morning, according to forest officials.

The incident was reported from Gadi village, where the victims including two women were out in the fields when the attack occurred. One person was said to have died on the spot, while the two injured women were taken to a hospital. Of them, one succumbed to injuries during treatment, it was stated by Giridih Divisional Forest Officer (East) Manish Kumar Tiwari.

It was further informed that two to three herds of elephants had been moving around the Giridih forest division over the past few days. A person had also been killed by the herd on November 22 in the Jamua area. According to officials, two elephants had reportedly entered Giridih from Hazaribagh on Sunday night, and one of them was believed to have been involved in Monday’s incident.

The deceased were identified as Shanti Devi (70) and Bodhi Pandit (52), both residents of Gadi village, while the injured woman was identified as Suman Devi (45) of Pesam village under Barkatha police station limits.

Immediate relief of ₹30,000 each was provided to the families of the deceased, while the remaining compensation of ₹3.70 lakh is expected to be disbursed within 10 days as per government norms, forest ranger Sanjeev Kumar said.
