Two persons, including a woman, were killed in separate incidents after being attacked by a wild elephant in Jharkhand’s Koderma district , officials said on Thursday.

According to forest authorities, the first incident occurred on Wednesday evening in Mariampur village under Koderma police station limits . A 55-year-old woman, identified as Maniya Birhorni, was trampled to death. Another woman sustained injuries in the attack and is currently undergoing treatment at Koderma Sadar Hospital.

In a second incident reported around 2 am on Thursday, a man sleeping outside his house in the same area was attacked by the elephant. The victim, identified as Baleshwar Soren, a migrant labourer from Deoghar district, died on the spot.

Forest officials confirmed that both incidents were caused by the same elephant, which has been moving through the locality. Efforts are underway to monitor the animal and prevent further attacks.

Koderma Circle Officer Ravi Bhusan said immediate relief of Rs 25,000 has been provided to the families of the deceased. The remaining compensation will be disbursed after completion of formalities, in accordance with the state government’s provision of Rs 4 lakh compensation in cases of deaths caused by elephant attacks.

The back-to-back incidents have raised concerns over increasing human-elephant conflict in the region, particularly in areas bordering forest zones.
