Two Firefighters Killed in Greece Helicopter Crash Amid Escalating European Wildfire Crisis

Two crew members were killed after two Greek firefighting helicopters collided mid-air during a wildfire operation west of Athens, highlighting the increasing dangers faced by emergency responders as Europe battles a severe wildfire season.

The accident occurred in the Psatha area of western Attica, where two Bell helicopters, each carrying a two-member crew, were deployed to fight a fast-spreading wildfire. One aircraft crashed after the collision, killing a Greek and Danish crew member. The other two crew members, a Greek and a British national, were rescued alive.

The crash took place as strong winds intensified wildfires across Greece, making firefighting operations more difficult. Nearly 500 firefighters and 23 aircraft were deployed, but powerful gusts prevented some aircraft from reaching the sea to collect water for aerial firefighting. Authorities ordered evacuations in areas including Kandili, Agia Skepi and Toutouli, while coastal communities such as Porto Germeno remained under threat. The incident has drawn attention to the risks faced by disaster response teams operating in extreme conditions. Firefighters and rescue personnel across Europe are increasingly working in hazardous environments as rising temperatures, dry conditions and stronger winds contribute to more destructive wildfires.

The wildfire emergency in Greece comes amid a broader European crisis. In France, the Gironde megafire remained contained but continued burning after damaging around 420 square kilometres of forest and forcing over 2.24 lakh people to evacuate. Thousands of firefighters remained deployed to prevent the blaze from reigniting amid dry weather and high temperatures. Spain’s major wildfires had stopped advancing but continued to require monitoring after causing deaths and widespread evacuations.

The Greek wildfire situation has also revived memories of the 2018 Mati wildfire, which killed 104 people and remains one of Europe’s deadliest recent fire disasters. Experts have warned that climate change, rising heat and prolonged droughts are increasing the frequency and intensity of wildfires, placing greater pressure on emergency services. The helicopter collision serves as a reminder of the growing operational challenges faced by firefighting teams as Europe confronts an escalating wildfire threat.
