
Two Americans detained at Srinagar Airport after satellite phone found in luggage
Two US nationals were detained at Srinagar International Airport on Sunday after a satellite phone was recovered from their luggage during routine security screening , officials said.
The device was detected by airport security personnel during baggage checks, following which both passengers were immediately taken in for questioning and handed over to police for further investigation .
According to multiple reports, one of the detained individuals has been identified as Jeffrey Scott Prather , a resident of Montana, United States. The second individual, who was travelling with him, has not been officially identified by authorities so far. Some reports also suggest the presence of an accompanying local contact, though this has not been officially confirmed.
Officials stated that possession of satellite communication devices such as Thuraya or Iridium phones is strictly regulated in India , and requires prior approval from the Department of Telecommunications. Unauthorized possession can lead to seizure of the device and legal action under telecom and security laws.
The duo was subsequently handed over for further inquiry , and investigators are examining the purpose of travel, intended use of the device, and compliance with regulatory permissions .
Authorities have not indicated any terror or security link at this stage, and no formal charges have been announced.
