‘Two Amavasya days left for DMK’: Palaniswami predicts AIADMK comeback

AIADMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Friday declared that the DMK government’s days were numbered , claiming there were “only two Amavasya (new moon) days left” for the ruling party. Speaking at a rally marking the 109th birth anniversary of M.G. Ramachandran , Palaniswami vowed that AIADMK would form the next government and restore “Amma’s rule,” referring to late leader J. Jayalalithaa.

He announced that cooperative loans for persons with disabilities would be waived if AIADMK returned to power, highlighting a targeted welfare initiative. The rally saw enthusiastic public support, with thousands waving flags, chanting slogans, and citing rising living costs, unemployment, and delayed development as reasons for voter dissatisfaction.

AIADMK accused the DMK of corruption, poor welfare implementation, and administrative failures , alleging that promises made in 2021 had not been delivered. DMK leadership rejected the claims, with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin highlighted government achievements such as expanded pensions and infrastructure projects. The Congress , DMK’s key ally, confirmed ongoing seat-sharing discussions for the upcoming April-May 2026 elections , signaling alliance stability.

Party workers emphasized grassroots outreach and voter engagement, pointing to local hardships and the loan waiver promise as motivating factors. DMK supporters dismissed AIADMK’s statements as politically opportunistic, citing existing welfare measures as evidence of effective governance.

With elections approaching, both alliances are intensifying campaigns, making the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls a tightly contested contest.
