Two young trainees undergoing Agniveer training at the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong have died due to a suspected bacterial infection , while 28 others remain under medical observation at the Military Hospital Shillong , officials said. One trainee passed away last week, followed by another on Monday.

Both had been admitted to the hospital after showing symptoms consistent with a meningococcal bacterial infection . “We have collected samples from the patients and are awaiting test results to confirm the cause,” a senior Army official told.

The Defence PRO, Shillong, said that as a precaution, medication has been administered to all close contacts following medical protocols. Measures such as the use of masks and restricted movement have been enforced within the training facility to prevent further spread. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and assured the public that there is no cause for panic.

Meghalaya Health Minister W. Shylla stated that the state health department is coordinating with military authorities . “We have stepped up surveillance and preparedness measures. Necessary public health protocols are in place,” he said, urging people to remain vigilant but not alarmed.

Medical teams are continuing to monitor the condition of the hospitalized trainees, while facilities like the CSD canteen and other areas frequented by the trainees have been thoroughly sanitised .
