Twelve parties register on opening day as Nepal prepares for March 5 general election
Nepal began preparations for its upcoming general election scheduled for March 5, 2025, with twelve political parties submitting their applications on the very first day of party registration at the Election Commission (EC). Among them is the newly-formed Nepali Communist Party, marking its first participation in a national election.
The Election Commission has opened the party registration window from November 17 to 26, inviting all political groups wishing to contest the general election to register formally. EC spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said the initial response has been encouraging, indicating active political participation and interest in the democratic process.
The general election in Nepal aims to elect members to the House of Representatives (Lower House) and Provincial Assemblies. Nepal follows a mixed electoral system that combines First-Past-The-Post (FPTP) and Proportional Representation (PR). Under FPTP, candidates who secure the highest votes in their constituencies are directly elected. Under PR, parties receive seats based on the percentage of total votes they receive, ensuring representation of women, marginalized communities, and minority groups.
Over the years, Nepal has made significant developments in its electoral process, including the use of digital systems to manage voter data, stricter monitoring to ensure fair campaigning, and rules that promote inclusive participation. The Election Commission has also focused on transparency, voter education, and ensuring equal opportunities for new and smaller parties.
As the registration progresses, more political parties are expected to join the process. The final list will determine which parties can compete, form alliances, and campaign across the country in the lead-up to the March elections.
