Actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) , on Sunday passed a resolution urging its leader to contest the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from the Perambur constituency in North Chennai, citing the area’s long-standing socio-economic challenges .

The resolution was moved by Aadhav Arjuna, general secretary for election campaign management, at a party meeting in Chennai. He said Vijay had repeatedly expressed his desire to represent a constituency affected by poverty, unemployment, drug abuse and lack of development and transform it into a model constituency.

Arjuna criticised the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) , alleging that North Chennai had suffered from years of neglect. He urged party cadres to begin TVK’s political journey to Fort St George from Perambur and work towards victory in all 234 constituencies.

Currently, Perambur is represented by DMK MLA R.D. Sekar is considered a stronghold of the ruling party and the INDIA alliance . The constituency has a large working-class population and a strong organisational base for the DMK, making it a challenging seat for a new political force.

Political observers said that if Vijay decides to contest from Perambur, it would become one of the most closely watched electoral battles in the state. While the DMK enjoys an organisational advantage, Vijay’s popularity and appeal among youth and first-time voters could influence voting patterns. Analysts cautioned, however, that converting cinematic popularity into electoral success in a politically entrenched constituency would be a major test for TVK.

Responding to the resolution, TVK general secretary N. Anand said the proposal had been unanimously accepted and would be conveyed to Vijay, describing Perambur as a constituency of symbolic importance for the party.

Vijay has not yet announced a final decision on his constituency, and party sources said consultations are ongoing.Residents of Perambur expressed mixed reactions . While some welcomed the prospect of greater attention to issues such as housing, sanitation and employment, others said development promises should be judged by concrete action rather than celebrity status . If confirmed, Vijay’s entry is expected to intensify the political contest in North Chennai ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls .
