TVK Government to Unveil First Full Budget on August 5, Big Welfare Announcements Expected

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government will present its first full Budget for the financial year 2026-27 in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on August 5, marking a significant milestone for the Joseph Vijay-led administration after assuming office earlier this year.

Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson will table the General Budget, while Agriculture Minister R. Vinoth will present the Agriculture Budget on August 6. Following the Budget presentation, the Business Advisory Committee will meet to decide the duration of the Assembly session and the schedule for discussions on the Budget and demands for grants.

Assembly Speaker J. C. D. Prabhakar expressed hope that the session would witness constructive debates and confirmed that the proceedings would be telecast live, allowing the public to closely follow the government's policy announcements.

In the run-up to the Budget, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay held a series of meetings with senior bureaucrats, department heads and Cabinet ministers to finalise the government's development roadmap and prioritise the implementation of key election promises.

The Budget is expected to outline the government's strategy to fulfil several flagship commitments, including the proposed ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance for homemakers, support schemes for youth, and other welfare initiatives. The government has already rolled out its one-gram gold ring scheme for newborns, signalling its focus on social welfare.

The maiden Budget also comes against the backdrop of a challenging fiscal situation. The government recently released a White Paper stating that Tamil Nadu's debt has reached around ₹10 lakh crore, while total liabilities stand at ₹13.18 lakh crore, highlighting the financial pressures inherited by the new administration.

Despite the fiscal strain, the TVK government has maintained that welfare programmes will continue. Meanwhile, the separate Agriculture Budget is expected to announce targeted subsidies, rural development measures and initiatives aimed at strengthening the state's farming sector.
