The haunting world of Tumbbad is set to return to the big screen with its much-awaited sequel Tumbbad 2, which is targeting a theatrical release on December 3, 2027 . Nearly a decade after the original film reshaped Indian horror storytelling with its blend of folklore and dark fantasy, the sequel promises a bigger and more ambitious cinematic experience.

Actor-producer Sohum Shah is returning to headline the project while also producing it under his banner Sohum Shah Films. The film officially went on floors earlier this year with a muhurat ceremony in Mumbai , attended by several industry figures including producer Boney Kapoor and Pen Studios head Dr. Jayantilal Gada, signalling the scale and industry backing behind the project.

The sequel has generated fresh excitement with the addition of acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui to the cast. While the makers have kept details of his character tightly under wraps, Siddiqui has hinted that the role will be layered and psychologically complex, adding a new dimension to the mythological horror narrative.

Filming for the project recently began on Madh Island in Mumbai , where the opening schedule includes a large-scale set-piece sequence involving around 200 performers and crew members . The set itself reportedly took weeks to construct, reflecting the makers’ attempt to significantly expand the film’s scale and visual scope compared with the original.

The production has also roped in international prosthetics and creature-design experts , including artists who have worked on global franchises like Star Wars and Harry Potter , to enhance the film’s supernatural elements and practical effects.

First released in 2018, Tumbbad earned critical acclaim for its eerie atmosphere, rain-soaked visuals and exploration of greed through the legend of the cursed deity Hastar. The film later achieved cult status, and its successful theatrical re-release in 2024 reignited interest among audiences, leading to the official announcement of the sequel.

Early reports suggest that Tumbbad 2 will expand the mythology of Hastar and may shift focus to Pandurang , the son of Vinayak, exploring deeper themes of greed, inheritance and immortality within the dark folklore-inspired universe.
