‘Tumbbad 2’ goes on floors with grand muhurath ceremony
The sequel to the acclaimed horror film Tumbbad officially commenced production today with a traditional muhurath ceremony, marking the return of one of Indian cinema’s most distinctive folklore-driven narratives. Actor-producer Sohum Shah led the ceremony alongside producer Boney Kapoor, signalling the start of filming under director Adesh Prasad.
The upcoming film is expected to revisit the dark, mythological world introduced in the original, centred around the cursed entity Hastar and the destructive consequences of unchecked greed. The sequel features a strong ensemble, including Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Nimisha Sajayan in pivotal roles, with production backed by PEN Studios.
Released in 2018, Tumbbad earned critical acclaim for its atmospheric storytelling, striking visuals, and unique blend of horror and mythology. Though it had a modest theatrical run initially, the film gradually achieved cult status through word-of-mouth and digital platforms. Its intricate narrative, rooted in Indian folklore, and its exploration of human greed set it apart within the horror genre.
The film’s enduring popularity was reaffirmed during its 2024 re-release, which garnered over ₹30 crore at the box office, an impressive feat for a reissued title . The strong response highlighted the film’s lasting appeal among audiences and reaffirmed its position as a modern classic in Indian horror cinema.
With production now underway, expectations are high for Tumbbad 2 to expand on the original’s legacy while delivering a fresh and immersive cinematic experience.
