Tsygankov’s late double seals Girona’s first away win in Spanish league football

In the 2025-26 Spanish league season (La Liga Matchday 16) , Ukrainian forward Viktor Tsygankov struck twice in the final 15 minutes to help Girona register a crucial 2‑1 victory over Real Sociedad, earning the club its first away win of the season and a much‑needed boost in its survival battle. Gonçalo Guedes had opened the scoring for Sociedad before Tsygankov’s decisive double in the 76th and 84th minutes turned the game around, lifting Girona out of the relegation zone in a dramatic late comeback.

Real Sociedad had the upper hand for most of the first half and took the lead when Goncalo Guedes unleashed a superb strike 10 minutes before the break. Girona found it difficult to break through Sociedad’s defence early on but stayed in the contest with disciplined play.

The visitors returned with greater intent after halftime and were rewarded in the closing stages. Tsygankov equalised in the 76th minute, calmly finishing a fast counterattack set up by Azzedine Ounahi. He then completed the turnaround in the 84th minute with an audacious backheel from Alex Moreno’s cross, silencing the home crowd.

The result lifts Girona out of the relegation zone to 17th place, just one point behind Sociedad, and could prove vital in shaping their season.

Sociedad midfielder Igor Zubeldia admitted the hosts collapsed after the break, conceding that the team completely lost control in the second half.
