President Donald Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome for America” missile defence system could cost about USD 1.2 trillion over 20 years , according to a new analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) , sharply exceeding earlier projections of USD 175 billion .

The nonpartisan CBO report describes the estimate as an illustrative modelling scenario , rather than a precise cost assessment of a fully defined Pentagon programme, citing limited technical details from the Defence Department on the system’s final architecture.

The initiative, launched through an executive order in Trump’s first week in office, envisions a nationwide, multi-layered missile defence shield combining ground-based systems, advanced sensors, and space-based interceptors designed to detect and destroy incoming missiles at different stages of flight. Trump has said he expects the system to be fully operational by January 2029 .

The concept is partly inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome , but on a far larger scale intended to protect the entire United States against both regional and long-range missile threats.

A major cost driver is a proposed constellation of around 7,800 space-based interceptor satellites , which the CBO estimates could account for about 70% of total acquisition costs , pushing overall expenses above USD 1 trillion . Earlier estimates from the agency suggested space components alone could reach USD 542 billion over two decades .

The report notes that Congress has already approved about USD 24 billion in initial funding for early development under broader defence legislation.

Alongside escalating costs, defence analysts have raised serious questions over feasibility and effectiveness , warning that the system may struggle to perform as intended against large-scale or coordinated missile attacks from near-peer adversaries . These assessments have fuelled broader uncertainty over whether the programme can achieve its stated operational goals within the proposed timeline.

Despite these concerns, supporters argue the system could significantly enhance US missile defence capabilities, though its final performance, cost burden, and technical viability remain unresolved.
