Trump’s “Doha Moment”: Rebukes Netanyahu over surprise Qatar strikes

I n an unusual departure from his strong pro-Israel stance, US President Donald Trump publicly rebuked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Israel launched airstrikes in Doha, Qatar, targeting Hamas operatives. Trump insisted he had no prior knowledge of the assault, describing it as a “unilateral” move that undermines both peace negotiations and America’s strategic interests.

“I’m not thrilled about the whole situation,” Trump told reporters in Washington. “We want the hostages back, but we are not thrilled about the way that went down today.” He stressed that while defeating Hamas remained a “worthy goal,” the Israeli strike inside Qatar—a close ally, mediator in Gaza ceasefire talks, and host to the US Al Udeid Airbase—was damaging to broader regional stability.

The incident was especially sensitive given Qatar’s recent role in brokering talks for hostage releases and its deepening ties with Washington. The Gulf emirate had even gifted Trump a luxury Boeing 747-8 jet earlier this year, a gesture that stirred debate over ethics but underscored Doha’s closeness with the US administration.

Trump revealed the White House was informed of the attack only moments before it occurred, too late for US envoy Steve Witkoff to prevent the strike. He later called Amir of the state of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to reassure him that such an incident “would not happen again” and announced plans for a defence cooperation pact with Doha.

Qatar condemned the airstrikes as “cowardly” and said its government had received no warning until explosions shook the capital. The episode adds to mounting tensions, as Qatar has already faced crossfire in the region, including Iranian missile retaliation against US targets earlier this year.Trump’s rebuke of Netanyahu stands out as a rare public disagreement between the two leaders, raising questions about the resilience of their alliance as the Gaza conflict drags on.
