Trump warns Iran of consequences as US moves naval assets closer to Gulf

Tensions in West Asia have escalated amid strong statements from the United States and sharp reactions from Iran. US President Donald Trump has warned Tehran of serious consequences if it continues its crackdown on internal protests or expands its nuclear activities.

Speaking to reporters while travelling after an overseas visit, Trump said the United States would not remain silent in the face of large-scale violence against civilians. He stated that any harm to peaceful protesters would cross American red lines and could invite a military response, though he did not elaborate on the nature of such action.

Trump confirmed that the US has repositioned naval assets closer to the Gulf region as a precautionary step. He said the deployment was intended as a deterrent and emphasised that Washington was prepared to act if necessary. US defence officials, however, have not publicly provided operational details regarding the movement of warships.

The US has consistently expressed concern over Iran’s nuclear programme and has accused Tehran of pursuing activities beyond civilian purposes, an allegation Iran has denied. Trump reiterated that renewed nuclear escalation or mass repression would not be tolerated , recalling past military operations carried out in coordination with allies, without giving specific timelines or targets.

Iran has been witnessing widespread unrest in recent weeks, with human rights groups alleging the use of excessive force against demonstrators. Activist organisations have claimed that thousands of people have been killed or detained during the crackdown. International news agencies have said these figures cannot be independently verified due to restricted access and limitations on reporting from inside Iran. Iranian authorities have rejected the claims, asserting that those killed were involved in violent activities.

The Iranian government has also imposed strict controls on internet access , citing security concerns. Rights groups say the measures have made it difficult to obtain reliable information from the ground, while the government maintains that the restrictions are necessary to maintain public order.

Reacting to the US warnings, Iran’s foreign ministry said that any attack on the country would be met with a strong response . Iranian officials warned that escalation could destabilise the entire region and have global consequences, while accusing Washington of provoking tensions and interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.
