Trump To Meet Delcy Rodríguez, UK’s Burnham, Japan’s Takaichi And Gulf Leaders At UNGA In New York

US President Donald Trump is set to hold talks with Venezuela’s acting President Delcy Rodríguez, UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly next week. Trump is expected to meet the leaders on Tuesday, September 22, as he holds a series of diplomatic engagements on the sidelines of the annual UN gathering.

Trump’s meeting with Rodríguez is expected to be an informal “pull aside” rather than a formal bilateral meeting. It will be their first in-person encounter since a US military operation in January led to the capture of former Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and Rodríguez assuming the role of acting president. The meeting comes after Washington and Caracas moved towards closer engagement, including an energy agreement announced last month involving Venezuela’s oil reserves.

Trump is also scheduled to meet Andy Burnham, in what will be their first in person meeting since Burnham became UK prime minister in July. The two leaders have previously spoken by phone, including on issues involving Ukraine and the Middle East. Burnham is expected to use his UN visit to press international partners for support for Ukraine, while Gaza and Sudan are also expected to feature in his wider diplomatic agenda.

Trump will separately meet Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s prime minister. The encounter comes as Washington and Tokyo continue to manage a broad relationship covering security, trade and regional issues in the Indo Pacific. The White House has included the meeting among Trump’s scheduled engagements during his short New York visit.

Another major engagement will involve leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council, which comprises Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman. The meeting comes as the United States continues efforts to address the six month long conflict with Iran and discuss what comes next in the region.

Trump is also expected to address the UN General Assembly on Tuesday before holding his meetings and returning to Washington. The wider 81st UNGA will focus on conflicts including Iran, Ukraine and Gaza, along with issues such as artificial intelligence, climate change and UN reform.

As of Saturday, Trump’s announced schedule does not include a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, Ukrainian officials have previously said their diplomatic teams were working to arrange such a meeting, meaning the schedule could still change.

A meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also does not currently appear on Trump’s schedule. US officials said it was considered unlikely because Netanyahu is expected to have limited time in New York during Israel’s election season.
