Trump Shares 'Restraining Order Needed' Meme Targeting Meloni Ahead of NATO Summit

Just when the world thought the Donald Trump versus Giorgia Meloni saga had run its course, the American president decided that diplomacy needed one more push off a cliff. On Sunday, amid a marathon posting spree of over a hundred messages on Truth Social , Trump shared a doctored photograph of the Italian premier gazing up at him, captioned "Restraining order needed," a jab so juvenile it would embarrass a middle school group chat. Apparently, running the most powerful country on earth still leaves enough spare time for cyberbullying an ally.

The image mocks Meloni, 49, as supposedly starstruck by Trump, 80, reviving a spat that began last month when Trump claimed she had "begged" for a photograph with him at the G7 summit in France. Meloni denied the story as "completely made up" and reminded him, with the icy precision of someone who has clearly had enough, that "neither I nor Italy ever beg." Trump responded not with grace but with a fresh insult, claiming her popularity was slipping, a claim that recent polling politely disagrees with. Meloni, for her part, remains one of Italy's more popular leaders, while Trump's own approval numbers continue their gravity defying descent into negative territory.

The timing could not be more theatrical. The meme landed barely two days before the NATO summit in Ankara, where the two leaders are expected to cross paths and pretend none of this happened, all while Secretary General Mark Rutte tries to keep the alliance focused on defence spending and Ukraine instead of Trump's meme gallery.

Reactions poured in fast. Italian opposition figure Carlo Calenda called Trump "a despicable bully of the worst kind," while Deputy Premier Matteo Salvini urged that personal jabs must not derail the broader Italy United States relationship. Social media, unsurprisingly, had a field day, with one widely shared post suggesting Trump himself might need a padded cell rather than Meloni needing a restraining order.

What began as a squabble over a photograph has now spiralled into a full blown transatlantic sideshow, one that risks overshadowing serious NATO discussions with the sort of playground taunting nobody expected from two grown heads of state.
