Former US Marine and English teacher Robert Gilman has been released by Russia on humanitarian grounds after more than four years in detention. The 32-year-old, who was serving a 10-year sentence on disputed assault charges, is now back in the United States for medical treatment.

Gilman arrived at Dulles airport near Washington on Tuesday aboard a US government aircraft. He appeared thin and gaunt after his long detention. He was greeted by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, who brought hamburgers and milkshakes. Gilman is expected to continue to Texas for treatment at a US military medical facility.

President Donald Trump said he spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin before the release. Trump said Putin approved the move on humanitarian grounds and that Russia did not ask for anyone in return. US officials also said there was no prisoner swap and no known US concession. They described the release as a goodwill gesture.

Trump also shared a lighter moment. He said Gilman had just one request after his release: “A GREAT cheeseburger when he lands.” Trump added, “I will take care of that!” The comment quickly drew attention as Gilman began his journey home.

Gilman was arrested in Voronezh in 2022. Russian authorities accused him of assaulting a police officer while drunk. His family and supporters have disputed the case and said he was unwell when the incident happened.

His original prison term was later extended after more assault charges were brought against him. By late 2025, his sentence had reached 10 years.

His health became a major concern this year. He was moved to a civilian hospital in July. His lawyer said his condition had worsened. Supporters said he had lost a large amount of weight and had spent 47 days in a dissociative stupor. He was reportedly given a feeding tube and kept handcuffed to a hospital bed.

US officials have called Gilman a wrongfully detained American. Secretary of State Marco Rubio welcomed his release but urged Russia to free other Americans, including teacher Stephen Hubbard, who remains imprisoned there.
