President Donald Trump has nominated his former personal lawyer Todd Blanche to serve as Attorney General , calling him a “very talented guy” and saying he “did a great job” during their close working relationship.

Speaking at a White House dinner, Trump said Blanche would be formally submitted to the Senate and added, “We are going to make him permanent attorney general,” signalling strong support for his acting Justice Department chief.

Blanche previously served as part of Trump’s defence team, including during the New York hush money trial , where he played a key role in shaping legal strategy. He later became one of Trump’s most trusted legal advisers across multiple investigations and criminal proceedings.

After Trump dismissed Pam Bondi in April 2026 , Blanche was elevated to acting attorney general and has since overseen several controversial actions, including the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey , which Comey has described as politically motivated. He also led expanded investigations involving former intelligence officials and supported a short-lived USD 1.8 billion “Anti-Weaponisation Fund” , which was later withdrawn following bipartisan backlash.

Critics argue Blanche’s rise reflects a broader pattern in Trump administrations of appointing close legal allies to senior government positions, raising concerns about the independence of the Justice Department . Democratic lawmakers have warned that his leadership risks turning federal law enforcement into a tool for political retaliation.

Some Republicans have also expressed unease over the pace and direction of recent Justice Department actions, particularly politically sensitive prosecutions and proposed compensation schemes linked to allegations of government misconduct.

Supporters of Blanche argue he is addressing what Trump has repeatedly described as the “weaponisation” of the justice system against him and his allies, and restoring accountability within federal agencies.

The nomination now heads to the Senate, where Blanche is expected to face a tough confirmation battle amid growing scrutiny over loyalty-driven appointments and concerns about prosecutorial independence.
