Trump Meets Mamdani At Gracie Mansion As Their Unlikely Bond Takes Another Turn

President Donald Trump met New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday, September 21, during his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, with housing, affordability and immigration among the issues discussed despite their sharp political differences.

Trump joined Mamdani at the podium after their hourlong meeting and struck a notably friendly tone. Recalling Mamdani's earlier hesitation about moving into the mayoral residence, Trump said, “I want him to be a great mayor, and he’s certainly got potential. Got great potential.” Trump also reminisced about his previous visits to Gracie Mansion, telling Mamdani, “We especially get along.”

Mamdani said Trump had shared memories of visiting the residence during his years in New York. “The president shared many of his memories of having been to Gracie Mansion before,” he said.

There was also a concrete area of potential cooperation. Trump and Mamdani discussed the proposed Sunnyside Yards development in Queens, a major housing project that could create thousands of homes and jobs. The proposal would require federal involvement, and Trump expressed support for the development, although he did not announce a federal funding commitment.

The meeting was the latest in an unusual relationship between the Republican president and the Democratic socialist mayor. The two first met at the White House after Mamdani's election victory last year, following months of public political clashes. They met again in Washington in February, when Mamdani presented Trump with a mock New York Daily News front page calling for housing investment.

Their disagreements were nevertheless visible during Monday's appearance. Mamdani said he had told Trump that news organisations barred from the White House and White House press pool would be allowed to cover the Gracie Mansion event.

“We’re going to have all of the members of the press here on the lawn,” Mamdani said, adding that he believed everyone should be able to engage regardless of their opinions or criticism.

Trump defended his restrictions on certain outlets, saying, “I think that these outlets have an obligation to be fair.” He argued that if coverage amounted to “fake news”, he believed he had an obligation not to allow those organisations into the White House.

Mamdani said the two still have significant disagreements but that he would continue talking with Trump and anyone capable of delivering relief to New Yorkers. Their Gracie Mansion meeting therefore combined personal familiarity with negotiations over some of New York's most pressing issues, particularly its housing shortage and affordability.
