President Donald Trump’s administration has installed a statue of Christopher Columbus on the grounds of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building , adjacent to the White House, marking the latest effort to honor the controversial explorer. The marble statue is a replica of the Baltimore monument toppled into the city’s Inner Harbor in 2020 during nationwide protests following George Floyd’s death. The statue was provided by the Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations and created by sculptor Will Hemsley of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Trump and his allies have framed the installation as a reclamation of history. The White House declared on X that “Christopher Columbus is a hero, and President Trump will ensure he’s honored for generations to come.” Supporters, particularly in the Italian-American community, hail Columbus as a symbol of heritage and exploration , emphasizing his role in trans-Atlantic trade and cultural exchange.

The installation, however, has drawn widespread criticism . Many argue that placing Columbus on federal grounds whitewashes colonial history , ignoring his documented role in the exploitation and genocide of Indigenous peoples . Civil rights advocates say it undermines efforts to address systemic injustice and racial inequities highlighted during the 2020 protests. Critics also contend the statue belongs in museums rather than public spaces , where it can be contextualized, and see the move as politically symbolic , part of a broader effort to reshape public narratives and appeal to certain voter bases.

Despite the backlash, the statue now stands on the north side of the Eisenhower building facing Pennsylvania Avenue , encircled by protective fencing. The installation has reignited debate over how America commemorates history, balancing celebration of heritage with acknowledgment of past injustices
