Trump eyes Iran talks, tightens Cuba‑Venezuela pressure

US President Donald Trump has said Iran has reached out to the United States for negotiations following his warning of possible action over Tehran’s violent crackdown on nationwide protests, while simultaneously intensifying pressure on Cuba and asserting greater US control in Venezuela .

Trump told reporters that discussions were being explored to set up talks with Iran after he threatened action in response to the government’s handling of protests. Activist groups say the crackdown has killed at least 544 people , with many more detained as demonstrations continue across the country. While signalling openness to dialogue, Trump also indicated that the US could act if the situation worsens.

During the same period, Trump has once again claimed credit for stopping several international conflicts, repeating his assertion that his administration prevented major wars from escalating. He has continued to frame these claims as a key part of his foreign policy record.

In Latin America , Trump has taken a sharply aggressive approach following a recent US operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro , who was flown to New York and indicted on narco-terrorism conspiracy charges . Trump further drew attention by posting on social media identifying himself as the “Acting President of Venezuela” , even as the country’s vice president was sworn in as interim leader. He has said the US will oversee Venezuela’s transition and control the sale of 30 to 50 million barrels of sanctioned oil , with proceeds managed by Washington.

The developments have directly affected Cuba , a close ally of Venezuela that has long depended on subsidised oil supplies. With those shipments now cut off, Trump warned Havana to strike a deal with the US “before it is too late.” The Cuban government said 32 of its military personnel were killed during the operation that captured Maduro and criticised US sanctions, claiming losses of more than $7.5 billion over the past year.

Together, the moves underline a US foreign policy that combines threats, negotiations and direct intervention, with Trump positioning himself as a decisive power broker amid rising geopolitical tensions.
