Trump escalates attacks on NYC mayor-elect Mamdani after fiery victory speech
US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised New York City’s Mayor‑elect Zohran Mamdani following his historic election victory, calling his victory speech “very angry” and later mocking him during a speech in Miami by referring to him as “whatever the hell his name is.” Trump delivered those remarks after Mamdani’s win, not prior to it, as some reports suggested. In his address, Trump warned that Mamdani’s leadership could steer the city toward “communism,” asserting that Americans now face a clear choice between “communism or common sense.”
Mamdani, the first Muslim and South Asian to be elected mayor of New York City, delivered a forceful victory address in which he pledged to make the city a model of immigrant power, labour rights and corporate accountability. “New York will remain a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” he declared to loud applause. He then addressed what he described as an entrenched system of wealth and influence: “We will hold bad landlords to account … We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires … to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.”
Directly addressing Trump, Mamdani said: “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him… Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up. To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
Trump’s response:
In an interview with Fox News, Trump accused Mamdani of hostility and warned that he must show “respect towards Washington” if he hopes to govern effectively. “Yeah, I thought it was a very angry speech, certainly angry toward me,” Trump said. “He should be very nice to me… he’s off to a bad start.”
Speaking later at the America Business Forum in Miami a day after Zohran Mamdani’s historic mayoral win, Donald Trump escalated his criticism, referring to Mamdani dismissively as “Mandami, whatever the hell his name is,” and claiming Democrats had “installed a communist” in America’s largest city. The remarks were made after the November 4 election, not before.
“The decision facing all Americans could not be more clear, we have a choice between communism and common sense,” Trump said, warning that Mamdani’s policies would lead to “economic and social disaster” for New York. He added, “Communism hasn’t worked for thousands of years. I tend to doubt it’s going to work this time.”
Despite his criticism, Trump said he wants the city to succeed. “I love New York… We’ll help them. Maybe.”
As both leaders signal confrontation rather than compromise, New York enters a sensitive political transition, one that may redefine its relationship with Washington in the months ahead.
