Trump-Cohen Reunion: From Bitter Courtroom Foes to an Unlikely Alliance

Donald Trump’s appearance on Michael Cohen’s radio show marks one of the most striking reversals in their relationship, transforming a bitter legal and personal feud into a display of reconciliation. Cohen was once a trusted Trump fixer before becoming a key prosecution witness in Trump’s 2024 New York criminal trial.

Cohen testified that he arranged the $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels at Trump’s direction and that Trump knew about the reimbursement plan. Prosecutors argued that payments made to Cohen were falsely recorded as legal expenses, leading to 34 felony charges of falsifying business records. Cohen’s testimony linked Trump to the reimbursement scheme, although the defense attacked him as unreliable because of his criminal history and previous lies.

The jury convicted Trump on all 34 counts in May 2024, making him the first former US president convicted of felony crimes. In January 2025, Trump received an unconditional discharge, meaning the conviction remained but he received no jail time, probation or fine. His legal team has continued challenging the conviction.

Against that background, Trump’s friendly conversation with Cohen carries unusual political and legal weight. Cohen has softened his criticism of Trump, saying he felt pressured and coerced during earlier testimony and accusing prosecutors of pushing him toward evidence that would secure convictions. Trump seized on that reversal, describing Cohen as having been “weaponized” and praising his changed position.

The reconciliation also has a dimension. Cohen said the two had spoken several times over the past year and framed forgiveness as moving forward without erasing the past. Their renewed rapport could help Trump politically by reinforcing his argument that former allies were targeted by prosecutors.

For Cohen, the stakes are more concrete. He has resubmitted a presidential pardon application to the White House after an earlier request was rejected. Trump’s response could therefore determine whether the reunion remains symbolic or develops into a mutually beneficial political and legal relationship.

The full interview, due Sunday, could reveal whether their alliance extends beyond personal forgiveness.
