Trump Calls Nobel Peace Prize Decision a ‘Stain’ on Norway, Says He Deserved Eight Awards

US President Donald Trump has criticised Norway for not awarding him the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming he deserved eight prizes for each of the eight wars he says he helped settle.

Addressing a rally in Syracuse on Friday, Trump described the decision as an “indelible stain” on Norway and accused those responsible for selecting the laureate of discrediting the prestigious award.

“The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn’t,” Trump said, adding that the country would not forget what he called a “disgraceful and embarrassing decision”. He also claimed that the prize had been “forever discredited” by people he described as radical ideologues opposed to democracy.

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to South African former UN human rights chief Navi Pillay, whom Trump dismissed as a person he had never heard of. “The Nobel Prize was given out today to a liberal person who works at the United Nations, who nobody has ever heard of,” he said, while offering his congratulations.

Trump then listed the conflicts he claimed to have helped resolve, arguing that his efforts warranted multiple Nobel Peace Prizes. He said he was also working towards ending the conflicts involving Iran and Russia and Ukraine. The US president further claimed that he had prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and averted a wider regional catastrophe.

“I saved more lives than anyone in history,” he said. Referring to India and Pakistan, Trump reiterated his claim that he had prevented a war between the two nuclear-armed neighbours, asserting that his intervention had saved 50 million lives. Four US presidents have received the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama.

Obama received the award in 2009, during his first year in office. Trump has repeatedly criticised the decision, arguing that his predecessor received the honour despite, in his view, having accomplished little to justify it. Trump has frequently highlighted his claimed diplomatic achievements while expressing frustration over not receiving the peace prize.
