Trump backs FBI director Kash Patel amid reports of possible ouster

President Donald Trump on Tuesday expressed support for FBI Director Kash Patel, after a news outlet reported that he had considered removing Patel from his position. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “He is doing a great job I think,” in response to questions about the report.

Earlier, the White House had denied any plans to remove Patel. MS NOW, citing three unnamed sources, reported that Trump and his top aides were frustrated by what they described as negative headlines surrounding Patel and were considering replacing him with Andrew Bailey, the FBI’s co-deputy director.

Under U.S. law, FBI directors are appointed to 10-year terms and require Senate confirmation. This framework is designed to insulate the bureau from political interference, ensuring that investigations and intelligence operations remain independent. While the President can technically remove a director, doing so carries significant political and legal implications.

Patel, a loyalist to Trump, has previously served as an advisor to both the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense during Trump’s first term. He has also called for curtailing the FBI’s intelligence-gathering role and has advocated for the removal of employees who do not align with Trump’s policy priorities.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt described the MS NOW story as “completely made up” in a post on X, formerly Twitter. She shared a photo of Trump and Patel in the Oval Office, noting that the president laughed at the report and said, “What? That’s totally false. Come on Kash, let’s take a picture to show them you’re doing a great job!” MS NOW, however, said it stood by its reporting.

Since the start of Trump’s second term in January, more than 200 employees have been dismissed from the Justice Department, which oversees the FBI. Many of these individuals were involved in cases connected to Trump or his allies. Analysts say such mass firings could disrupt ongoing investigations, reduce institutional expertise, and affect morale within the bureau.

Experts also warn that sustained political pressure on the FBI could erode public trust in the agency, compromise the integrity of investigations, and weaken the statutory independence of its leadership. The bureau’s credibility relies on perceptions of impartiality, and any actions perceived as politically motivated could have long-term consequences for law enforcement and national security.
