Trisha slams ‘Inappropriate’ remark by TN BJP chief, calls for restraint in political discourse
Actor Trisha Krishnan has condemned remarks made by Tamil Nadu BJP chief Nainar Nagenthran , describing them as “distasteful and inappropriate” and asserting that personal lives should not be dragged into political debates.
The controversy erupted after Nagenthran, while commenting on actor-politician Vijay and his political entry, made a personal reference to Trisha. The remark, widely circulated on social media, was seen as an attempt to question Vijay’s political seriousness by linking him to unverified personal rumours involving the actor.
In response, Trisha issued a legal statement through her counsel on February 15, clarifying that she maintains a strictly neutral stance on politics and is not affiliated with any political party . Without naming Nagenthran directly, the statement expressed disappointment that such comments came from a person occupying a senior position in Tamil Nadu’s political space.
The communiqué stressed that Trisha “wishes to be defined solely by her professional work in cinema” and underscored the need for responsibility and equanimity from public representatives. It further stated that personal lives should not become the subject of political commentary.
Trisha shared the legal notice on her social media platform X, captioning it: “Disrespect should and always will be called out.” The post triggered widespread discussion online, with many users backing the actor and criticising the use of personal insinuations in political debates, while others called for greater decorum from political leaders.
The remarks also drew political reactions, including criticism from DMK deputy general secretary and Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi , who questioned the appropriateness of such comments.
The episode has unfolded amid heightened political activity following Vijay’s launch of his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which is positioning itself for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Nagenthran later stated that he did not intend to hurt anyone and acknowledged that the remark was a mistake.
