Tripura’s agarwood-based economy set to grow to Rs 2,000 crore, Says Scindia

Tripura’s agarwood-based economy is expected to grow to Rs 2,000 crore annually in the coming years, up from the current Rs 100 crore , Union Minister for DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Saturday. Speaking after laying the foundation stone for an Rs 80-crore agarwood cluster development project at Fulbari in North district, Scindia said the state’s trade is set to expand significantly due to policy support, infrastructure development, and quality certification initiatives.

He highlighted that the government has raised the export limits for agarwood chips from 25,000 kg to 1.5 lakh kg and for agarwood oil from 1,500 kg to 75,000 kg , removing major barriers to trade. The DoNER ministry is also digitising export approvals to simplify procedures and will allow traders to carry product samples abroad , which was previously restricted by customs. Scindia emphasised that high-quality production and global promotion are key priorities, with plans to obtain BIS certification and Geographical Indication (GI) tags for Tripura agarwood products to enhance their competitiveness internationally.

The minister also noted that the state plans to plant 25 lakh agarwood trees over the next two to three years to ensure adequate raw materials for both domestic manufacturers and export markets, as the current stock of 1.5 lakh trees is concentrated mainly in North and Unakoti districts. He said the Fulbari cluster will provide modern facilities for grading, processing, storage, and packaging, helping local industries reduce dependence on imports from countries such as Vietnam.

Scindia described his visit as part of Prime Minister Modi’s vision for growth and development in the northeast and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to promoting Tripura’s agarwood sector, supporting local livelihoods, and positioning the state as a global hub for quality agarwood products.
