Triple triumph for Pramod Bhagat in Nigeria

After a challenging period that kept him out of the Paris Paralympics, India’s para badminton star Pramod Bhagat returned stronger than ever, sweeping three titles at the inaugural Abia Para Badminton International held in Abia, Nigeria, from September 30 to October 5. His stellar performance not only reaffirmed his status as one of India’s most decorated para shuttlers but also inspired a new generation of athletes.

The 37-year-old, who had won gold at the Tokyo Paralympics, dominated the men’s singles SL3 category, defeating compatriot Mantu Kumar in a thrilling final 21-7, 9-21, 21-9. Bhagat’s trademark composure and tactical brilliance were on full display, as he bounced back strongly after dropping the second game to clinch the title.

Bhagat then teamed up with Sukant Kadam to capture the men’s doubles gold, overcoming Peru’s Gerson Jair Vargas Lostaunaul and Diana Rojas Golac 21-13, 21-17. The pair displayed excellent coordination and court awareness throughout the tournament.

In mixed doubles (SL3-SU5), Bhagat partnered with Arati Patil to secure his third title, winning another closely contested final. This clean sweep highlighted Bhagat’s versatility and consistency across multiple disciplines.

“Every victory motivates me to push my limits further. Competing at this level and bringing glory to India is always special,” Bhagat said. Kadam added, “Playing alongside Pramod always pushes me to bring my best. Our understanding on court has grown stronger with every match.”

Other notable Indian performers included Ranjit Singh, who earned three bronze medals in men’s singles WH1, men’s doubles WH1-WH2 (with Paramjit Singh), and mixed doubles WH1-WH2 (with Shabana). Nurul Hossain Khan claimed silver in men’s singles WH2, while Uma Sarkar won silver in women’s singles SL3 and a bronze in women’s doubles SL3-SU5 with Arati.

India also achieved a clean sweep in men’s singles SU5, with Karan Paneer, Rahul Vimal, and Sativada taking gold, silver, and bronze, respectively. Additional bronze medals were secured by Nilesh Gaikwad (men’s SL4) and Kanak Singh Jadaun (women’s SL4).

The tournament underscored India’s growing dominance in para badminton, with Pramod Bhagat leading the charge and setting the benchmark for excellence.
