Tragedy strikes Indian Railways: 2 deadly accidents claim lives across Bilaspur & Mirzapur

A horrific series of railway accidents across India on Wednesday claimed the lives of several passengers, with devastating consequences in both Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, and Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. These incidents have prompted swift rescue operations and an outpouring of grief from local communities and government officials.

Bilaspur Train Collision:

The death toll from a tragic train collision near Bilaspur Railway Station has risen to 11. The incident occurred at 4 pm on Tuesday when a MEMU passenger train collided with a stationary goods train. The passenger train, traveling from Gevra to Bilaspur, overshot a red signal and crashed into the rear of the stationary goods train at an estimated speed of 60-70 km per hour. The force of the impact was so severe that one of the passenger coaches mounted a goods train wagon, trapping many passengers inside.

Rescue teams worked tirelessly through the night, using cutting tools to extract bodies and survivors from the wreckage. At least 20 people were injured in the collision, including nine women and a two-year-old boy. Among the injured were the assistant loco pilot and the train manager of the passenger train, as well as the guard of the goods train. All are being treated at local hospitals.

The five deceased identified so far include passenger train loco pilot Vidya Sagar, Lovkush Shukla, Ranjeet Prabhakar, Shila Yadav, and Priya Chandra. Several bodies were found severely crushed inside the wreckage, and efforts continue to identify the remaining victims.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the passenger train failed to apply emergency brakes despite clear visibility. The cause of this tragic incident remains under investigation by railway safety officials.

The Indian Railways has announced compensation for the victims’ families - ₹10 lakh for the deceased, ₹5 lakh for those seriously injured, and ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries. State Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also announced an additional ₹5 lakh compensation for the families of the deceased.

Mirzapur Railway Tragedy:

In a separate incident earlier on Wednesday, six women were tragically killed at Chunar Railway Station in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh. The victims were attempting to cross the tracks after alighting from the Chopan Express, despite the presence of a nearby foot overbridge. As they were crossing, they were struck by the Netaji Express, which was arriving from Howrah.

The victims, who had come to the region for the Kartik Purnima snan, were identified as Savita (28), Sadhna (16), Shiv Kumari (12), Anju Devi (20), Sushila Devi (60), and Kalawati (50). According to railway officials, the Chopan Express had halted at platform four, and although there was a foot overbridge, some passengers chose to cross the tracks directly, leading to the tragic accident.

The Uttar Pradesh government expressed deep grief over the incident. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to expedite relief operations, while National and state disaster response teams were deployed at the site. Union Minister and local MP Anupriya Patel also conveyed her condolences, promising swift action for relief and medical assistance.

These devastating accidents have raised serious concerns about railway safety across the country. As investigations continue, authorities have pledged to take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Both local and national leaders have expressed their condolences, while rescue operations remain ongoing to support the victims and their families.
